Compare PDFs reads the text of two files and shows which pages differ, with added words highlighted in green and removed words in red. You also get a report you can download and keep.
How to use Compare PDFs
- Open the tool and choose two PDFs. The first is the original and the second is the revised version.
- Use the arrows to swap them if needed.
- Press Compare PDFs.
- Read the summary on screen or download pdf-comparison.html.

Good to know
- Only text is compared. Changes to layout, fonts, colours or images are not detected.
- Scanned PDFs have no text, so they cannot be compared this way.
- Very large pages are compared by line instead of by word.
Questions and answers
Does it find changed images?
No. It compares text only.
Which file should go first?
Put the older version first. Words only in the second file are shown as added.
Can I compare scans?
Not yet. Scanned pages contain no text for the tool to read.
Privacy
This tool runs inside your browser. Your file is read into your device’s memory, processed there and handed back as a download. It is not sent to a FirePDF server. You can test this by switching off your internet connection after the page has loaded and running the tool again. Read the Privacy Policy and the Security page for details.
